HVTDC Partners With Cornell University to Provide Research
and Resources to Hudson Valley Businesses

The executive director of HVTDC, Thomas G. Phillips Sr., announced today that the agency is now collaborating with Cornell University’s Cornell Center for Materials Research (CCMR) Small Business Outreach Program to provide information and outreach services to Hudson Valley businesses that could benefit from CCMR’s state-of-the-art research capabilities, equipment and materials expertise. Both organizations are funded by NYSTAR, The New York State Office of Science, Technology and Academic Research (www.nystar.state.ny.us), which fosters and promotes the growth of high technology research and economic development. HVTDC (www.hvtdc.org) is the not-for-profit business and technology resource center that helps small to mid-sized manufacturers, technology-based companies, inventors, entrepreneurs and other businesses in seven Hudson Valley counties – Rockland, Putnam, Dutchess, Ulster, Orange, Sullivan and Westchester - to adopt new technologies and business practices to grow their business.

“Cornell University is one of our country’s most respected research institutions,” explains HVTDC’s Phillips. “By partnering with their Small Business Outreach Program, we can offer Hudson Valley businesses unparalleled opportunities to address materials-related cost and productivity issues by accessing cutting-edge materials research available at Cornell.” Robert Stein, HVTDC Field Engineer states, “We are very pleased to be able to add Cornell’s world-class capabilities and equipment to our own efforts to enhance the competitiveness of our clients.”

CCMR Industrial Programs Manager, David Jung, states, “Our purpose is to assist business owners who grapple with a difficult global marketplace, or are being squeezed between low prices and the high costs of developing products, or competing against much larger players with deep pockets and vast resources. We also assist companies that need to find affordable ways to understand advances in technology. Our role is to help those companies to succeed in their business arenas.“

CCMR (www.ccmr.cornell.edu) is a National Science Foundation, Department of Energy, and NYSTAR funded interdisciplinary center at Cornell University whose mission is to advance, explore and exploit the science and engineering of advanced materials. Their goal is to become world leaders in the design, control and understanding of the behavior of both crystalline and disordered nano-materials. This objective is being pursued through fundamental experimental and theoretical studies of the assembly and processing of nano-materials and their resulting behavior, educational outreach, industrial collaborations, the Green Composites Consortium, and the Cornell Fuel Cell Institute.

Members of CCMR’s Small Business Outreach Program include over 100 faculty members who represent a range of expertise and are conducting more than $80 million in funded basic materials research that will impact future industries and markets. CCMR also manages, and makes available, $18 million worth of materials research facilities to partnering agencies such as HVTDC. Pat Govang, CCMR’s Industrial Programs Director comments, “The work we do, and the facilities we use, are tremendous potential resources for regenerating New York's small manufacturers. This program uniquely enables us to reach out, connect and provide value to companies by supporting their materials-related training, problem-solving, facilities-usage or research needs."

CCMR’s Jung elaborates, “Companies come to us with very specific interests and needs. We look to our broad interdisciplinary faculty and facilities resources to find a potential match to what each company is looking for. Very often we make that match and companies begin a working relationship with the University. Like the Hudson Valley Technology Development Center, our role is to guide companies toward becoming more competitive in their individual marketplaces.”
