Hailing from Rockland County, NY, James Lynch recently graduated SUNY New Paltz with a degree in Computer Engineering. Throughout his tenure at university (2007-2011), Lynch excelled in a variety of subjects, but his passion for computer development fueled an aspiration to embark on a career as a Computer Engineer. With relevant experience in C, C++, MySQL, PHP, HDL, and Development as well as past projects that include Android Phone Apps, a Bluetooth wireless project, complex counters and ALUs, Lynch was a natural choice for an internship with the Hudson Valley Technology Development Center, Inc. (HVTDC) which began in May of last year. At that time, Lynch was assigned to do embedded C++ programming, an advanced undertaking for an intern. Due to his strong performance on this and other project assignments, HVTDC was quick to offer Lynch a full time Computer Engineer position beginning in January.

Dr. Baback Izadi, Ph.D. Associate Professor and Chair Dep. of Electrical and Computer Engineering at SUNY New Platz states, "I am pleased to hear that HVTDC has chosen one of our graduates as an employee to support their business development mission. Mr. Lynch was a talented computer engineering student at SUNY New Paltz and I'm sure that the skills he developed will be very useful for HVTDC.

Westchester Manufacturer Allied Converters Awarded Green Business Certification Through Hvtdc

Newburgh NY, September 21, 2011 - On June 23rd, Allied Converters, Inc. was awarded a Green Business Certification through the Hudson Valley Technology Development Center, Inc. (HVTDC). HVTDC's Green Business Consultant, Kristen DeClemente along with New Rochelle Mayor Noam Bramson and Deborah Newborn, Sustainability Coordinator for New Rochelle, were on site to present the award to Allied’s President, Richard Ellenbogen.

Allied Converters is a plastics converting company, manufacturing bags, sheets, rolls and shred made from Cellophane, polypropylene, polyester, colored films, and polyethylene. The company has been located in New Rochelle, New York for over 55 years and made a commitment to the environment over ten years ago during an expansion and rebuild project, which allowed the company to stay in New Rochelle.

Ten years ago energy efficiency was the focus of the expansion project, but since that time, Allied Converter’s commitment to the environment has grown to include recycling and reduction. The facility operates with utility bills that are approximately 80% lower than the average commercial facility in Westchester County, ($.50 per square foot versus $2.50 per square foot on average.) The Green Certification was just the "icing on the cake" of this long term project, which included the installation of a 50 kilowatt solar array with an integrated Combined Heat and Power (CHP system), providing almost 80% of the facilities electricity. Additionally, the now 55,000 square foot plant operates landfill free, with all of the waste being recycled or re-purposed. The completion of this project is something Allied Converters is extremely proud of. When asked why Allied Converters is so committed to the environment, Mr. Ellenbogen answered, “I am doing this for my daughters.”

HVTDC's Senior Engineer Receives Villanova Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt Certification

Newburgh, NY April 26, 2011 - David Tooker, Senior Lean and Quality Systems Engineer for Hudson Valley Technology Development Center, Inc. (HVTDC) received Villanova University’s prestigious Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt (MBB) certification with a healthcare focus on March 25th.

Lean Six Sigma is a blend of two disciplines, both of whom date back to the time when the manufacturing industry was under great pressure for both quality and speed. Lean rose as a method for optimizing automotive manufacturing; Six Sigma evolved as a quality initiative to eliminate defects by reducing variation in processes in the semiconductor industry. The blending of the two disciplines recognizes that

optimum customer service can not be accomplished by focusing on “just speed” or “just quality”. The methodology ensures a proper balance is maintained between the quality of the service or product that is provided with the speed at which it is delivered or produced.

In today’s environment of escalating health care costs with limited budgets, many health care professionals are embracing Lean Six Sigma as the methodology to drive cost reductions while ensuring the quality of the health care system services remains high.

Tooker’s certification as a Master Black Belt recognizes his attainment of advanced skills in the areas of leadership, coaching, statistical analysis as well as the complete suite of Lean principles and methodologies. In addition it certifies that he has demonstrated his knowledge of these advanced skills through practical application in a medical environment.

Founded in 1988, the Hudson Valley Technology Development Center, Inc. (HVTDC) is a non-profit organization and one of ten regional technology development centers funded cooperatively through the NYS Foundation for Science, Technology and Innovation (NYSTAR), and the National Institute of

HVTDC Teams With Pepco Energy Services To Provide Zero Budget Impacts For Energy Consuming Equipment Change-out

Newburgh, NY January 25, 2011 – The Hudson Valley Technology Development Center, Inc. (HVTDC) and Pepco Energy Services, Inc. have joined forces to offer Hudson Valley entities a program to evaluate energy usage, identify opportunities to reduce usage and cost, and implement improvements with zero impact on budgets. Energy Savings Performance Contracts, a guaranteed and insurable/bonded program, cover the cost of both energy equipment and building envelope changes through the energy cost savings achieved through the improvements.

Pepco Energy Services is a wholly owned subsidiary of Pepco Holdings, Inc. (PHI). PHI provides institutional, governmental, industrial and commercial clients with comprehensive energy management solutions.

“HVTDC has had many requests from companies, government entities and academia to help them go beyond light bulb change-outs to save on energy costs.” says Brian C. Wrye, Business Development Director, HVTDC. “They have old equipment for heating and air conditioning, pumping water, etc., and they need to acquire more efficient, updated equipment. The problem is they don’t have money in their budgets to purchase the new equipment. Pepco offers a zero budget impact solution to these issues. It is very compelling.”

The program provides comprehensive, all-inclusive project implementation, thereby maximizing design savings with lower staff costs and typically, earlier completion of comprehensive projects. One contract with single point accountability for project performance significantly reduces the coordination and oversight required by the client.

Wrye further adds, “A fundamental benefit to clients is that Pepco guarantees the annual savings amounts through certified USDOE approved measurement and verification programs.”

Ulster County Toy Box Designer Practices What She Preaches

Newburgh, NY, January 21, 2011 - "Design is my joy and nature and the environment my passions. Creating JudiZuzu eco-friendly custom toy boxes for kids is my way of passing down that love to the next generation." Those are the words of designer Judith Frey, Judith Frey Designs, Ltd. and owner/founder of JudiZuzu Hand Painted Children's Furniture in Woodstock, NY.

Spanning over 4 decades, Judith has mastered knit textile design, jewelry design, sculpting and model making for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Liz Clairborne and Henry Dunay Designs (to name a few). "I grew up passionate about nature and making things with my hands. My grandfather was a naturalist and furniture designer. My mother was a water colorist of landscapes. I began making hand crafted custom furniture in the 70's and my one of a kind creations rivaled any store bought items and met my high expectations. Creating toy boxes for children was a natural evolution for me."

JudiZuzu designs began in 2004 when Ms. Frey custom designed a table for her newborn nephew. She then began to design toy boxes as her premier product. A portion of all proceeds from product sales is donated to the Boy's and Girl's Club of America or Operation Bear Hug.

Handcrafted Eco Friendly Kids Furniture Designed with All Eco Friendly Construction Materials

At JudiZuzu, they're all about creating a protected and healthy work environment, as well as a safe, beautiful and eco-friendly product for a child. With the assistance of Kristen DeClemente, HVTDC's Green Business Consultant, JudiZuzu recently became a Certified Green Business through the national "Green Business League". Ms. Frey is also a Certified Sustainable Furnishings Professional.

“There are way too many toxic chemicals in every market we can think of,” states Frey, “many of these chemicals create various health problems in children. I have always been extremely sensitive to chemicals of any kind, so I can't be around any that give me headaches, sinus discomfort or respiratory issues. That is why I select only those materials that allow me to remain healthy and that's why every piece of my hand crafted furniture is made with only eco-friendly construction materials and paints.”

Only Yolo Acrylic Zero-VOC non-toxic paints are used on JudiZuzu designs. This paint has been thoroughly tested and has earned the GreenSeal* Certification.

They use FSC certified non-added formaldehyde MDF called Arreis and glues that are eco-friendly. All pieces are sealed with low VOC water-based clear finishes.

"Keep your children safe from harm, and healthy, they deserve nothing less."

Green certification gives local lighting manufacturer an edge up on competition

Newburgh, NY- January 6, 2011 - “As a high quality lighting manufacturer, SELUX has always had a commitment towards the environment. By achieving a Green Business certification, we now have a national accreditation to support our claims, ”states Hansi Mueller, Marketing Manager at SELUX.

Since 1983, SELUX has made its home in Highland, NY. With a staff of 115, they manufacture and distribute high quality interior and exterior lighting fixtures for projects throughout North America. These fixtures are energy efficient and LEED certified. SELUX also offers energy saving solar powered exterior lighting fixtures. Many of those are IDA (International Dark Sky Assoc.) approved.

In cooperation with energy conservation agencies, SELUX strives to support and develop green technology products and practices. “We built a new warehouse several years ago and included day-lighting in the design. This not only reduces the cost of energy but promotes the overall well being of our employees,” Mueller states. Also by consuming less energy, day lit buildings decrease fossil fuel usage and carbon dioxide discharge. Along with daylighting, SELUX also installed solar panels on top of their warehouse which generates 40% of the office power, both energy efficient and eco friendly. SELUX uses a powder-coat paint process on its exterior and interior fixtures. This process, which re-uses 98% of all paint, has been recognized as an important milestone for the company in achieving sustainable practices and goals.

Hudson Valley Technology Development Center’s (HVTDC) Certified Green Consultant, Kristen DeClemente, worked with SELUX to complete an extensive assessment which earned SELUX more than 500 Green Points, and the Titanium Level Certification. “SELUX has earned this high level of certification because of the dedication of their management and staff. They truly understand the importance and benefits of implementing environmental improvements,” DeClemente states.

The health and safety of employees is always SELUX’s highest priorities. Recently SELUX went beyond the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards by installing an extractor to capture weld fume particles. The unit installed is rated at a MERV 15 and can capture 85%-95% of particles and submicron particles less than 1 micron.

Water conservation has also been addressed by SELUX. The company recycles 80% of water used by factory processes. Water pressure is reduced to faucets and many new toilets were installed with dual flush capability, and they have planted native plants to eliminate the need of watering the landscape and over water usage.

Changes will continue at SELUX as they try to reach the Emerald Level of the Green Business Certification. Also, a new sustainability team will be formed with employees who are passionate about continuing the environmental work and introducing new and creative ideas. The Green Business certification process does not end once the company receives certification. It is an ongoing process which assists the company in maintaining current energy saving practices and progressing towards the next certification level. Each company is required to recertify annually in order to maintain the Green Business Certification.

for Free Technical Support through SATOP

Fishkill, New York September 24, 2010 - The Hudson Valley Technology Development Center, Inc. (HVTDC) is reminding Hudson Valley area businesses of HVTDC’s partnership with The Space Alliance Technology Outreach Program (SATOP). This NASA-funded program provides up to 40 hours of FREE technical assistance to businesses utilizing the vast engineering expertise of NASA and participating Alliance Partners (NASA contractors and/or universities).

SATOP is available to any US-based small business or manufacturer (under 500 employees). Submitting a Request for Assistance (RTA) is easy! If your RTA qualifies, SATOP works to find an Alliance Partner (AP) engineer with the appropriate expertise to provide a solution. If an AP is found, you can receive up to 40 hours of free assistance by phone, fax, or email. Most RTA’s will be resolved within 90 days.

Requests should be clearly defined and focused on a specific project within one of the following engineering disciplines: mechanical, electrical, electronics, manufacturing, chemical, materials, environmental, industrial and structural (no software, internet or information technology solutions).

Through the Hudson Valley Technology Development Center (HVTDC), the SATOP program is open to all types of businesses including manufacturers and industrial firms as well as small businesses and entrepreneurs. Following an initial contact to the HVTDC, the inquiring company would be visited by a representative of the Center and given assistance in completing a Request for Technical Assistance (RTA). A SATOP Project Engineer would then contact that company to discuss the submitted request and verify the extent of the technical challenge. The SATOP Project Engineer would work to match the RTA with an engineering team that possesses the necessary expertise. Once an RTA is accepted, the Project Engineer would act as a liaison between the company and the Alliance Partner engineers. Most RTA’s are resolved within 90 days. In 2007 alone, NY SATOP serviced nearly 150 requests for new solutions to problems that affect the everyday lives of people and businesses across the Northeast.

For more information on SATOP, contact Phyllis Levine at the Hudson Valley Technology Development Center 845-896-6934 ext. 3001 or via e-mail at phyllis.levine@hvtdc.org. You can also submit an RTA by applying directly at www.spacetechsolutions.com

Continuous Improvement is the Mantra for Local Defense Manufacturer

Fishkill, New York, September 10, 2010 - Business survival in today’s economic environment is an achievement in itself, but to attain world class status as a manufacturer supporting the defense industry is truly outstanding. Nestled along Route 59 in the quiet community of Tallman in Rockland County, 901D LLC, a premier supplier of environmentally protected racks and cabinets to the US Department of Defense has attained this lofty status through a dedicated, focused and long term commitment to continuous improvement. Raytheon Corp. endorsed this achievement by announcing 901D as the recipient of their prestigious IDS Supplier Excellence Award.

In 2007, Mr. Serge Sequin, President and Owner of 901D stated, “For over ten years, we’ve been manufacturing cabinets and racks for the U.S. Department of Defense. It’s mandatory that every product we make meets several environmental requirements that often exceed the most rigid demands of the military and industrial markets. With increased demand for our products, our challenge is to find ways to streamline our operations and cut our costs.”

Mr. Frank Duvergne, General Manager of 901D enthusiastically took ownership to lead 901D staff on a multi-year path to attain these goals. One of the first steps was to engage the Hudson Valley Technology Development Center, Inc. (HVTDC) to provide the training, coaching and implementation assistance of the components of Lean manufacturing required for continuous improvement. HVTDC is well known throughout the Hudson Valley for its award-winning work of helping manufacturing, technology-based and small to mid-sized companies and organizations adopt new business practices to sustain growth and improve profitability. HVTDC Senior Business Development Engineer, Mr. David Tooker , CFPIM QI and Six Sigma Black Belt with over 25 years of Lean experience and knowledge, joined with Duvergne to form the leadership team for the project.

Under the tutelage and leadership of Mssrs. Duvergne and Tooker the 901D team developed a plan to examine and improve the key areas of the manufacturing operation. In the ensuing months and years, their collective efforts resulted in major improvements in key performance metrics throughout the business.

Duvergne states, “The training process began in 2007 with HVTDC providing 5S training to key production floor managers plus value stream mapping instruction to our engineering staff. This resulted in a much cleaner and organized production floor and production increased by 20%.”

The results were equally dramatic for all key metrics as the team addressed the different areas. On-time delivery performance started at 42%, rose to 60% and eventually to consistently in the mid 90% range. Supplier quality and on time performance both rose by greater than 25% while errors or “re-dos” in the engineering design area plunged by greater than 40%. These improvements enabled 901D to respond to a 12% sales growth without expanding their resource base (work force and equipment).

Tooker states, “901D looked at Lean Six Sigma as a way to not only improve the bottom line but to grow the business. Sure they have had growth problems but they approach these with the right thinking to quickly correct them. A lot of companies try to implement these approaches as short term initiatives with quick hits. This works up until the “next crisis” but if you truly want to get to the other side of Lean (real sustainable improvement and growth) company leaders need to truly embrace the process as did 901D.”

Earlier this year, 901D’s commitment to Lean Six Sigma provided even further rewards. The award of a large contract to assemble work stations for the US Navy required a new manufacturing line in a new facility to be on line very quickly. The 901D team did not hesitate to employ all of the Lean tools and practices they had been taught, implemented and practiced over the preceding few years in attacking the challenge. Their focus from the onset was on throughput and quality. The line layout centered on product flow, materials were stored at their point of use, workstations were neat and organized, quality at the source was embedded in standards and procedures, non value added steps were not allowed and visual controls were evident throughout. Operators were empowered to “stop the line” when defects or quality issues were found.

Duvergne comments, ” Our commitment and use of Lean Six Sigma allowed us to bring up the new line in a new facility ahead of schedule with minimal problems and we are now fully engaged in meeting the obligations of the new contract. Our investment in the time, energy and cost of totally implementing a Lean culture has been more than repaid in improved throughput, quality and employee sense of belonging and morale. “

NYSTAR designated Regional Technology Development Centers, The Hudson Valley Technology Development Center, Inc. (HVTDC), located in Fishkill, NY and the Center for Economic Growth (CEG), based in Albany, NY, have formed an alliance to bring HVTDC’s Engineering Consultant Services Group of semiconductor experts to the Capitol region’s supply chain manufacturers.

HVTDC launched its Engineering Consultant Services (ECS) initiative earlier this year in an effort to assist the wealth of talent in engineering for computers and electronics that found themselves jobless as a result of the NXP closure in the summer of 2009. Many of these professionals are longtime residents of the area who do not wish to relocate. ECS provides engineering expertise with their team of experienced professionals to assist manufacturing suppliers in identifying opportunities, understanding and interpreting qualification requirements and determining appropriate health, safety and environmental actions. “With our initial intent to “outsource to the Hudson Valley”, states Thomas G. Phillips, Sr., HVTDC’s Executive Director, “we contacted our sister organization in Albany (CEG) to create a union between the two that would address the needs of potential semiconductor suppliers to GLOBALFOUNDIRES and other semiconductor companies that may locate in the Capitol Region”.

In July, 2009 GLOBALFOUNDRIES announced it officially broke ground on the construction of Fab 2, a new semiconductor manufacturing facility located at the Luther Forest Technology Campus in Saratoga County, New York. Once completed, this will stand as the most technologically advanced semiconductor manufacturing facility, or fab, in the world and the largest leading-edge semiconductor foundry in the United States. The construction and ramp-up phases for the new $4.2 billion facility are expected to take approximately three years to complete, with volume production expected in 2012.

Earlier this month, HVTDC and its core team of Engineering Consultants met with 13 individuals from 10 companies in the Capitol Region. The intent was to introduce special requirements and manufacturing process enhancements for these suppliers to attract business from GLOBALFOUNDRIES. The meeting was very well received and another is scheduled for June 24th to include a broader outreach to area suppliers.

Louis Aitcheson, CEG Program Director for Business Development states, “Knowing where opportunities lie and how to maximize those opportunities are a key component of growth. I’ve seen first hand how HVTDC’s Engineering Consultant Services team leverages their collective knowledge – and rolodexes – to the benefit of our manufacturing clients”.

Founded in 1988, the Hudson Valley Technology Development Center, Inc. (HVTDC) is a non-profit organization and one of ten regional technology development centers funded cooperatively through the NYS Foundation for Science, Technology and Innovation (NYSTAR), and the National Institute of Standards & Technology (NIST). HVTDC provides hands-on business support services to small and mid-size manufacturers and early stage technology companies by delivering high-quality, cost beneficial technical and management services.

November 30, 2009 - Fishkill, NY - “This course was excellent!” states C.K. Boyle, Abbott Lund-Hansen Sustainable Energy Solutions, “I have referred to this class many times and used the “root cause” method for problem solving in several situations. I believe local municipalities would greatly benefit from the Lean and Green methodologies taught, especially during these trying difficult times.”

Boyle’s comments reflect the overall feelings of the 18 individuals recently completing the “Green Team Leader Training for Business Professionals” seminar conducted by the Hudson Valley Technology Development Center Inc. (HVTDC), a recognized leader in business innovation and implementation. Attendees understanding of “Green” was expanded beyond the most visible green activities of reduction of energy usage and alternative energy to include sustainable improvements of air and wat6er supply and quality as well as the conservation of all natural resources.

The training introduced participants to various Green assessment tools and productivity/environmental principles focused on energy, pollution and waste stream reductions. Students learned application techniques highlighted by HVTDC’s “Lean Lego” simulation, where they became “workabee’s” at a mock manufacturing facility building cars out of Lego parts. This interactive activity demonstrated simple implementations one can use to reduce work in process, paperwork and errors which, in turn, add to efficiency and benefit the environment.

The four day course of lectures and hands on activities was interspersed with presentations by distinguished speakers representing a diverse array of backgrounds, interests and areas of expertise. Speakers included; Mr. Don Perry, Managing Director of Shiva’s Karma, a strategic management consulting firm focused on developing Green Businesses. Mr. Perry is a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Accredited Professional (LEED – AP); Mr. Tracey Hall, Director of Building and Grounds at Sullivan Community College. Mr. Hall is directly involved in the College’s Master Plan including the geothermal system and wind turbines installed there; Ms. Patrice Courtney-Stong, owner of Patrice Courtney Strong’s Consulting, which provides marketing and education outreach to 20 counties for the New York State Energy Research & Development Authority (NYSERDA) under the Energy Smart Communities program and; Mr. Les Neumann, who possesses over 25 years experience with established and emerging companies as a senior executive, project manager, consultant and advisor, sales and marketing director, infrastructure architect and product developer. Mr. Neumann is also the co-founder of the HV Center for Innovation.

Finally, a comprehensive review of available resources and outreach programs geared towards the transformation to energy efficiency, sustainability, reduction of toxic chemical use, air emissions and waste generation was provided.

This seminar series was sponsored by the Hudson Valley Green Talent Pipeline Partnership, a collaboration of the Workforce Investment Boards (WIBs), from Dutchess, Orange, Rockland, Sullivan, Ulster and Westchester Counties in addition to the City of Yonkers. This collaboration is funded under a grant through the NYS Department of Labor.

Stay tuned because plans are underway for this course to run again in February, 2010.

HVTDC is one of ten regional technology development centers funded cooperatively through the NYS Foundation for Science, Technology and Innovation (NYSTAR), and the National Institute of Standards & Technology (NIST). The agency celebrated its 20th anniversary during 2008.
